CALL FOR SPEAKERS

DuMA seeks speakers for a new initiative, The City Speaks, a festival of humanities, scheduled for late September 2019.

What is it?

The City Speaks, a festival of humanities, is a series of compelling and thought-provoking talks connecting the arts and humanities to big ideas in our world today.

2019 Themes:

  • Tiny Revolution: An idea that starts out as a conversation that grows and contributes to the betterment of the world.
  • Disruption: An idea or innovation that creates a new way of thinking, displacing established approaches or existing conventions.
  • Redemption: A powerful and uplifting theme that acknowledged the human potential for renewal after having failed or been broken.
  • “Shout”acracy”: A form of civil disobedience in which the loudest voice affects the greatest impact.
  • Collective Joy: Group events which involve music, synchronized movement, costumes, and a feeling of loss of self.

Who can participate?

Anyone, of any age, may submit an idea for a talk.

Talks will be selected based on the ability of the theme/idea to spark discussion and its relation to the arts and humanities.

What is the format for giving a talk?

We are open to your ideas!

Talks may be delivered solo, in pairs, or as part of a panel of moderated discussion.

The length of the talk is also up for debate. In general, solo talks should not be shorter that 5 minutes or last longer than 20 minutes. As a general rule, the length of time it takes to convey your idea and stimulate discussion if the right length of time.  If in doubt, be brief, and focus on the 3 elements of every great story: introduction, conflict (problem) and resolution (solution).

It’s entirely up to you how to use your time, including whether to use images/slides, video, or simply to share your idea through the spoken word.

The City Speaks sessions will last between 60 to 90 minutes.
