About the Artist: From 1936 to 1943, John Vachon traveled across America as a part of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) photography project. In the fall of 1938, he undertook his first extensive solo trip photographing agricultural programs in Nebraska with a special focus on the city of Omaha. Vachon later recalled that it was in Omaha when he first realized that he had his own style of seeing with a camera: “I knew that I would photograph only what pleased or astonished my eye, and only in the way that I saw it.”
