Interesting fact about the Artist: By 1947, Curtis’ health was so bad that he was unable to continue hunting for gold in the northern parts of California, a favorite pastime of his. However, the demand for gold was slowly disappearing as many of the mines were empty of gold, taken by hungry gold miners. Because of this, Curtis had to sell his successful gold extracting machine, the Curtis Counter Current Concentrator, in late 1947 for a measly ten dollars. (from: Makepeace, Anne. Edward S.
