About the Artist: In September of 1928, Grant Wood took what would be his last trip to Europe, not to France this time as always before, but to Germany. He traveled to Munich to work with stained glass artisans on his commission for a commemorative window for the Veterans Memorial Building in Cedar Rapids. This period spent in Munich is often considered the turning point in his career when his style evolved from a painterly, conventional impressionism to a distinctive brand of closely-drawn realism.
