Being in the artillery (cannon cockers) meant being stationed in a fire support base, usually a small spit of land in the boondocks, protected by a company of grunts and rolls of concertina wire. There was very little outside contact, one English speaking radio station and a newspaper once a month. There was no political talk about the war and little to no support, other than family, from back home. It was just a bunch of guys doing their jobs and hoping to get their 365 days in safely. There was little to no racial bias. Two of my best friends were black, guys trying to inform this white guy from Iowa about social injustices by giving him books like Eldridge Cleaver’s ‘Soul on Ice’. Strong bonds were formed, brotherhood bonds. Like almost every soldier in every war, our mantra was Eric Burden’s ‘We gotta get out of this place, if it’s the last thing we ever do. ‘Bottom line: even if you don’t support a war, always support the troops.’

Randall “Randy” L. Byrne

Randy Byrne a native of Ryan, IA  entered the Marine Corp in 1967 at the age of 17. He began his military career as a legal clerk and a law clerk, becoming a trouble shooter ( electronics) and a tail gunner. He served two tours in Vietnam- Marble Mountain south of Da Nang (volunteered for the second tour stating "I don't want to leave my brothers behind").  He earned several decorations and ribbons throughout his service. Randy assisted in the evacuation of 500 South Vietnamese civilians during the monsoon season in February or March 1970 near Chu Lai. He was very instrumental in rescuing injured soldiers during the Vietnam War as a CH-53 helicopter tail gunner. He was honorably discharged in November of 1973. Semper Fi.

During Gary's tour of duty near Qui Hnon not only did he operate heavy vehicles (had his fiancée's name stenciled on one of his trucks), he also served in the combat division. Gary was also a tower security guard in Long My. Letters from home kept him going. Medals received included Expert Rifle, National Defense, and Vietnam Service.

Dennis was in the 589th Engineer Battalion, Company D, as a Specialist 5.  He served time in Vietnam from December 1968 through February 1970.  "Denny" also received the Army Commendation Medal which is presented for "sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service".

Tom was an Aero Medical Evacuation Helicopter pilot and flew in Vietnam, Korea and the continental United States. He was one of the last remaining members of the Solo Pilots Association of helicopter aviation pioneers. He passed away recently in San Antonio, Texas.

LCPL Juergens served as a rifleman with the 3rd Marine Division near the DMZ.  He died on September 8, 1966 from a wound to the chest during a fire fight with the enemy in the vicinity of An Dinh, South Vietnam.  LCPL Juergens was killed ten days shy of his 21st birthday.

My Dad has the honor of always emceeing my hometowns Veteran Day Ceremony. Many show up in our tiny town of 800 people,  to honor those within our little town, but the feeling is big. 2020 has changed a lot for us, there was no ceremony. No one to carry the flag, read the speech, or to congregate at our little local VFW afterwards for food, drinks and camaraderie. It was quiet, it was different and we, especially the veterans felt that void.
