TIBERIU CHELCEA

Artist Statement

The works from the Randomly Accessed Memories series combine elements of cross-stitching, electronic circuit boards, and electronic components. Alluding to how early computers were built using “weave routing,” and how magnetic core memories were manufactured by hand weaving, these works start as custom-designed circuit boards then I embroider on top of the works using cotton thread and cross-stitching. They are inspired both by my upbringing in Romania and my education as an electronics engineer, as well as allude to the historic connections between the textile and electronic industries. In particular, Randomly Accessed Memory #4 and #19 are inspired by embroidery patterns recorded about 110 years ago in the Mehedinti County in Romania.
