Inspired by a book of the same title, the Monuments Men were the subject and title of a recent Hollywood movie, starring George Clooney. During World War II, a group of museum directors, curators, artists and architects, led by Iowa-born George Stout, helped to protect masterpieces from the Nazis, who stole thousands of works of art from museums, churches and private collectors.
