Meet the Craft Invitational artists, visit the galleries, enjoy some music, and relish food prepared in the spirit of the exhibition: tradition with a twist.
Cedar Rapids-born, former big leagues pitcher Cal Eldred will headline two days of programs celebrating the exhibition “Picturing America’s Pastime” at the Dubuque Museum of Art (DuMA) on April 13 and 14, 2024 in Dubuque, IA.
Also on April 13:
– Casey-award winning author Phil S. Dixon will lead a conversation about the history of the Negro Leagues. Dixon sits on the National Advisory Board for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, has authored seven books, and interviewed over 500 players and their families.
– Illinois-native and Major League Baseball Supervisor of Umpires Larry Young will share highlights from his career which included calling Nolan Ryan’s 5,000th career strikeout against Rickey Henderson and the 1996 and 2003 World Series.
– Author-historian John Liepa will host a discussion on the origins of baseball in Iowa and author-historian John T. Pregler will discuss his research on Dubuque’s role in the history of professional baseball.
On April 14, the conference shifts to Dyersville for an exclusive program at the Field of Dreams movie site, the “If You Build It Exhibit,” and Dwier Brown’s Baseball Hall of Dreams.
All discussions will take place at the historic Hotel Julien Dubuque, site of a series of meetings that led to the creation of the American League.
All-inclusive tickets are $25 for the general public and $15 for students and members of the Dubuque Museum of Art and the Society for American Baseball Research. Tickets include lunch and refreshments, all talks, and a tour of DuMA’s exhibitions “Picturing America’s Pastime: A Snapshot of the Photograph Collection at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum” and “Picturing Dubuque Baseball curated by John T. Pregler.”

Join Heritage Works for an extra special ArchiTREK event, focusing on the history and rehabilitation of the Schrup Farmstead. The event will highlight vernacular architecture amidst a backdrop of fall colors. Wine and Cheese will be provided.
Our next Architrek Tour is approaching on Thursday, September 21st at 6 p.m. we invite you to join us on a walking tour through the Historic Cathedral District. We will begin at Lower Main and end in Dubuque’s oldest neighborhood. The half mile tour will feature landmarks such as the Julien Hotel, St. Raphael’s Cathedral and the Fenelon Place Elevator. Journey beyond the Millwork district in this architectural walking tour that explores the peripheral space to Dubuque’s industrial core. The tour will explore the industrial, residential, and civic neighborhood infrastructure at our town’s center. The half-mile walking tour begins at the former Rouse and Dean Foundry Co building, located at 990 Washington St. and will end at the Jubek New World brewing building, located at 115 W. 11th St.
As part of your paid entry to the event you will receive a beer ticket to be exchanged at Jubek New World Brewing at the end of the tour.

Join artists Mary Bergs and Lisa Hochstein inside their collaborative exhibition, Correspondences, for an intimate gallery conversation about their process and the trust and humility it required.
Mother/daughter artists, Wendy S. Rolfe and Thérèse Mulgrew will be introduced by actress Kate Mulgrew inside their exhibition. Surrounded by 30 portraits, they will talk about the joys and challenges of integrating artistic and family life and how that shows up in Intimate Exchange.
The party continues with cocktails, music and art-making that celebrates the women who influence us—so, bring someone who inspires you.
Toast the beginning of summer with old friends and new artists. Gather in Washington Park for an evening of fashion, craft beer and wine, artful desserts and artist demonstrations inspired by DuMA’s Craft Invitational.
Tickets include Museum admission, all artist talks and demonstrations, music, a Bavarian pretzel from Chew on This food truck, desserts from Pastry by Sandrine, and your choice of a beer flight from Jubeck New World Brewing and Dimensional Brewing, a glass of wine, or a soft drink. Additional food and beverages will be available for purchase from local vendors. AMIDST will offer free digital magazine for event attendees.

Inspired by the museum’s Flow: Journey through the Mississippi River Watershed exhibit, students will use water to create droplet-themed artwork. Students will have a chance to play with watercolors, watercolor pencils, and blowing, misting, and splatter-painting techniques.
