Introduction to Figure Drawing with Lisa Towers

The Dubuque Museum of Art is excited to welcome back artist and instructor, Lisa Towers, to lead a three-week all levels drawing class on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 PM, on April 30th, May 7th, and May 14th.

This class will focus on studying the figure and learning how to create an abstract interpretation of the human form. You will begin by looking at examples from the past and present, including the work of artist Gerit Grimm, currently on display in the Falb Family gallery.

In the first exercise, you will learn to abstract the figure by drawing it as three-dimensional cubes with directional light while working in front of the ceramic sculptures by Grimm. This will be done in charcoal on newsprint.

In the second exercise, you will invent your own abstracted figures taking inspiration from Grimm's work and from other examples that will be shown. This exercise will be done in charcoal or graphite, heightened with white on toned paper.

The class is open to all levels including beginners (supplies will be available). If you have no drawing experience you will be tasked with simple studies and if you have experience you will be challenged at a suitable level. You will be encouraged to spend extra time drawing at the museum outside of class hours.

At the end of the class, you may choose to place your work on display in the lobby of the Museum with the exhibition being part of the closing reception celebrating our current home and its legacy.

Class is open to students from 12-17 (with parental permission) and adults. There are nude figures in the Grimm exhibition.

PICTURING AMERICA’S PASTIME CONFERENCE

Cedar Rapids-born, former big leagues pitcher Cal Eldred will headline two days of programs celebrating the exhibition “Picturing America’s Pastime” at the Dubuque Museum of Art (DuMA) on April 13 and 14, 2024 in Dubuque, IA.

Also on April 13:
– Casey-award winning author Phil S. Dixon will lead a conversation about the history of the Negro Leagues. Dixon sits on the National Advisory Board for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, has authored seven books, and interviewed over 500 players and their families.
– Illinois-native and Major League Baseball Supervisor of Umpires Larry Young will share highlights from his career which included calling Nolan Ryan’s 5,000th career strikeout against Rickey Henderson and the 1996 and 2003 World Series.
– Author-historian John Liepa will host a discussion on the origins of baseball in Iowa and author-historian John T. Pregler will discuss his research on Dubuque’s role in the history of professional baseball.

On April 14, the conference shifts to Dyersville for an exclusive program at the Field of Dreams movie site, the “If You Build It Exhibit,” and Dwier Brown’s Baseball Hall of Dreams.

All discussions will take place at the historic Hotel Julien Dubuque, site of a series of meetings that led to the creation of the American League.

All-inclusive tickets are $25 for the general public and $15 for students and members of the Dubuque Museum of Art and the Society for American Baseball Research. Tickets include lunch and refreshments, all talks, and a tour of DuMA’s exhibitions “Picturing America’s Pastime: A Snapshot of the Photograph Collection at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum” and “Picturing Dubuque Baseball curated by John T. Pregler.”

Journey beyond the Millwork district in this architectural walking tour that explores the peripheral space to Dubuque’s industrial core. The tour will explore the industrial, residential, and civic neighborhood infrastructure at our town’s center. The half-mile walking tour begins at the former Rouse and Dean Foundry Co building, located at 990 Washington St. and will end at the Jubek New World brewing building, located at 115 W. 11th St.

Mother/daughter artists, Wendy S. Rolfe and Thérèse Mulgrew will be introduced by actress Kate Mulgrew inside their exhibition. Surrounded by 30 portraits, they will talk about the joys and challenges of integrating artistic and family life and how that shows up in Intimate Exchange.
