Interesting fact about the Photographer: The Bering Sea was nicknamed “the sea that breaks your back” among the natives of Nome, Alaska. Yet, this did not scare Curtis or his crew who were dead set on sailing the cold sea to photograph tribes he hoped were not yet assimilated to Christian ways. (from: Makepeace, Anne. Edward S. Curtis Coming to Light. Washington D.C.: National Geographic, 2002. Print.)
